About ESE/IES

Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is also famous by the name of Indian Engineering Services (IES). The IES(ESE) is initiated to recruit engineers to fulfill the technical and managerial functions of the Union government and conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) every year. ESE is a combined three-stage competitive examination for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services.The prelims exam is normally conducted in January across the country in over 40 centers. Basically, the recruitment is open to candidates from the core disciplines such as civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and electronics and telecommunication engineering.

“The examination conducted for recruitment into the IES is no doubt a difficult one, but at the same it ‘was’ and it ‘will’ be the most prestigious one for engineers. It is the ‘dream’ of every engineer to join the government sector, and the IES is the entry point. Depending on the discipline, the examination is categorized, and the openings are generally in government and public sector undertakings. The recruited candidate could be posted to Indian Railway Service of Engineers, Indian Railway Stores Service, Indian Defence Service of Engineers, Indian Ordnance FactorIES Services, and the Central Water Engineering and Central Power Engineering Service.

Students who qualified the Indian Engineering services examination are then eligible for IES department allocation in the distinctive post at the effects of this examination related to engineering which is under the government of India. Promotions in IES(ESE)

18 PH(LDCP‐15 & HI‐03) vacancies.  The number of vacancies is liable to alteration.

Reservations will be made for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes
and Physically Disabled Category in respect of vacancies as may be fixed by the Government of India.

UPSC IES 2018 Syllabus

UPSC IES 2018 Exam Eligible Engineering Stream/Branch

(I) Civil Engineering.
(II) Mechanical Engineering.
(III) Electrical Engineering.
(IV) Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.

Other aspirants whose stream are not mentioned on the above can write ESE exam by selecting one of the above eligible streams/branches.

UPSC IES 2018 Exam Eligibility

The candidate must have a degree in engineering (B. Tech.) from a university in India incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as universitIES under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.

Age criteria for UPSC ESE exam, minimum age limit for the eligibility for IES is 21 years and maximum age limit is 30 years. And the age is measured from the 1st January, of the current year. There is no attempt Limit.

The number of vacancies to be filled on the results of the examination is expected to be approximately 440 including 17 PH (LDCP-12 & HI-05) vacancies. The number of vacancies is liable to alteration.

Recruitment to the Services/posts (Group A and Group B)  is carried out on the basis of merit, candidates’ preferences and their medical fitness. In IES department allocation, Aspirants belonging to reserved categories can have relaxation in age and other benefits as per the norms issued by Government of India.Candidates who are declared qualified on the result of written part of the examination will be required to indicate their preference for Services/Posts at the appropriate time in the Detailed Application Form.

Highlights of IES Exam Centres

  • Applicants should note that there will be a ceiling on the number of candidates allotted to each of the centres except Chennai, Delhi, Dispur, Kolkata and Nagpur.
  • Allotment of Centres will be on the first‐apply‐first‐allot basis and once the capacity of a particular centre is attained, the same will be frozen.
  • Applicants, who cannot get a centre of their choice due to ceiling, will be required to choose a centre from the remaining ones. Applicants are, thus, advised that they may apply early so that they could get a Centre of their choice.
  • No request for the change in IES exam centres will be entertained once it opts.
