The exam is conducted for selection engineers for Government of India’s engineering organizations, such as Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), Central Engineering Service (CES), Military Engineering Services (MES), and others. So, we are providing the IES exam pattern 2019 and syllabus and selection process of UPSC exam 2019. This exam contains two paper such as Preliminary and Mains Paper. Only four branches may give this exam, but if you want to give this paper then you must have to fit anyone of the paper category for example if you are from Automobile engineering and your most of the syllabus common with Mechanical engineering then you may give the mechanical paper.

Engineering Services Examination(ESE)/ Indian Engineering Services(IES) is conducted every year by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission). UPSC is responsible for the entire examination and recruitment process. ESE or IES exam consists of 3 stages:

  • Stage 1 or Preliminary Examination,
  • Stage 2 or Mains Examination and
  • Stage 3 or Personal Interview

1. IES 2019 Stages in details

Stage 1: It is also known as a Preliminary exam (carrying 500 marks).

  • Number of Papers: Stage-1 will have two paper: Paper-1 will have questions from General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Paper & Paper-2 will have questions from Engineering Discipline-specific Paper(Civil Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering/ Electrical/ Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering).
  • Mode of Exam:  IES Prelims is conducted in offline mode.
  • Type of Papers: It is an Objective Type Paper i.e. the questions are of Multiple Choice. Each question will have 4 choices to which one answer is correct. Candidates are provided separate OMR sheets for both the papers, wherein the correct answer needs to be colored.
  • IES Marking Scheme:  For each wrong answer, one-third mark is deducted. Candidates marking more than one answer, it is treated as a wrong answer. Questions left unanswered will have no deduction for marks.
  • Only Preliminary/Stage-I qualified candidates will be permitted to appear in Mains/Stage-II.

Stage 2: It is also referred to as Mains Examination (carrying 600 marks).

  • Mode of Exam: IES Mains is conducted in offline mode i.e. it is a written examination.
  • Number of Papers: Stage 2 will have two papers(Engineering Discipline-Paper-I & Engineering Discipline- Paper-II). Both the papers will have questions from the selected Engineering discipline (Civil Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering/ Electrical/ Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering).
  • Type of Papers: The exam is of Conventional Type.

Stage 3: This stage is also known as the Personality Test, carrying 200 marks.

  • It is the final stage, candidates qualifying the written exams are called for the interview.
  • Candidates shortlisted from Stage 2 i.e. IES Mains exam have to fill a Detailed Application Form (DAF) online.
  • The stage assesses the following skills in a candidate:
    • Suitability of candidate for a career in the public service sector
    • Mental caliber or Mental alertness
    • Leadership Qualities
    • Initiative & Intellectual Curiosity,
    • Mental & Physical energy and
    • Other social traits and interest in current affairs.
  • Candidates qualifying all the stages (Stage 1 + Stage 2 + Stage 3), the marks secured in each stage are included to prepare the Final Merit list of the Engineering Service Examination.

3. Negative Marking Scheme

Candidates should note that there will be penalty (Negative Marking) for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the Objective.

  • There are four alternatives for the answers to every question. For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate, one-third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty.
  • If a candidate gives more than one answer, it will be treated as a wrong answer even if one of the given answers happens to be correct and there will be the same penalty as above for that question.
  • If a question is left blank i.e. no answer is given by the candidate, there will be no penalty for that question.
  • No negative marking in the conventional paper (subjective papers).

Listed below are facts related to IES Exam Pattern:

  • IES or Indian Engineering Service examination (Stage 1 and Stage 2) is conducted in offline mode.
  • All the questions in Preliminary Exam are objective in nature. Whereas, questions in Mains Exam are conventional in nature. Check IES Syllabus
  • The medium of examination is English.
  • In IES 2019, there will be a deduction of one-third of the mark allotted for each question for every wrong answer attempted.

IES 2019 is scheduled for January 07, 2019 (IES Prelims) and July 01, 2019 (IES Mains). Candidates who clear Prelims as per IES Cut Off set, they are eligible to appear for Mains examination. The nationwide law entrance exam is conducted for recruitment to various posts in Indian Engineering Services, under the Government of India.
