UPSC IES Exam Pattern 2017

IES Exam Pattern are changed from ESE(IES) 2017 onward and drastic changes has been made as compare to ESE(IES) 2016. The following IES Exam Pattern changes will be implemented from 2017: IES 2017 Pattern – UPSC ESE New Pattern 2017

  1. Two tier examination patterns will be changed to 3 tier system which includes Preliminary/Stage-I (Objective Type Papers), Mains/Stage-II (Conventional Type Papers) and Personality Test which will make the screening process of huge number of candidates easier.
  2. Only those candidates qualifying the Preliminary/Stage-I will be permitted to appear for Mains/Stage-II
  3. Syllabus of ESE 2017 will include General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Paper which was only General ability paper before.
  4. English, History , Geography Civics and Biology  is completely removed. and much other topic is included in ESE 2017 syllabus
  5. Weightage of conventional papers has been increased by 100 marks.
  6. Weightage of objective papers has been reduced by 100 marks.
  7. From 2017 the ESE paper will be of 1100 marks (written-objective+conventional) and 200 marks (personality test) which will make the total; of 1300 marks which was 1200 marks earlier.

but there is a confusion to many students regarding exam pattern of ESE 2016. so here we try to clarify the exact pattern of ESE of both ESE 2016 and ESE 2017 onward separately.

2. Negative Marking Scheme

Candidates should note that there will be penalty (Negative Marking) for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the Objective.

  1. There are four alternative for the answers to every question. For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate, one-third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty
  2. If a candidate gives more than one answer, it will be treated as a wrong answer even if one of the given answers happen to be correct and there will be same penalty as above for that question.
  3. If a question is left blank i.e. no answer is given by the candidate, there will be no penalty for that question
  4. No negative marking in conventional paper (subjective papers).
